New Fees for Passports & Emergency Travel Documents

The government has announced that new fees for passport applications and emergency travel documents will be introduced later this week. These changes are part of a broader effort to ensure the Home Office can cover its operating costs through the fees paid by users, reducing reliance on general taxation. The government has clarified that no profit is made from these charges. The fees simply contribute towards processing passport applications, providing consular support overseas, and managing British citizens at UK borders.

From 10 April 2025, the cost of applying for a UK passport will rise. Here’s what you need to know:

  • For those applying online from within the UK, the fee for a standard adult passport will increase from £88.50 to £94.50. The fee for a child’s passport will move from £57.50 to £61.50.
  • Postal applications will also see a rise, with adult applications going up from £100 to £107, and children’s applications increasing from £69 to £74.
  • For travellers who require faster service, the Premium Service, which provides a new passport within one day, will see fees rise as well. Adult applicants will pay £222 instead of the previous £207.50, and children’s fees will jump from £176.50 to £189.
  • Those applying from overseas will also see higher charges. A standard online adult application made outside the UK will increase from £101 to £108, while children’s applications will rise from £65.50 to £70.
  • Standard paper applications submitted overseas will go up from £112.50 to £120.50 for adults, and from £77 to £82.50 for children.

In addition to passport applications, new fees for emergency travel documents and emergency passports will come into effect from 9 April 2025.

  • Emergency travel documents, which allow urgent travel when a British passport cannot be used, will see their fee rise from £100 to £125. The new charge now includes courier delivery, which was previously billed separately.
  • In rare cases where an emergency travel document cannot be issued and an emergency passport is provided instead, the fee will also rise, from £75 to £125.

Travellers are strongly advised to apply for passports in good time before their intended travel dates to avoid any inconvenience or additional costs.
